5G signal covers the summit of Mount Everest for the first time, China builds the world's highest 5G base station

Xinhua News Agency, Lhasa, April 30. On the afternoon of the 30th, China Mobile ’s 5G base station at the 6,500-meter elevation camp on Mount Everest was put into use, which is currently the world ’s highest 5G base station. In addition to the base stations that have been built at 5300 meters and 5800 meters above sea level, 5G signals have covered the mountain climbing route and peak of the north slope of Mount Everest.

The reporter learned from the Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5200 meters that the construction of 5G signals was carried out in synchronization with the ongoing elevation measurement of 2020 Everest. According to the actual measurement at the Everest base camp, the downlink peak value of the 5G 100 MHz independent networking mode exceeded 1.6G per second, and the uplink rate can reach up to 215M per second, which can effectively meet the 4K and VR high-definition live broadcast requirements on Mount Everest.

It is understood that the base station at 5300 meters is the highest normalized 5G base station in the world, which mainly protects the signals of the Everest base camp area. After the commercial launch of 5G, climbers, tourists and local residents can use 5G services in the base camp area. The base stations at 5800 meters above sea level and 6500 meters above sea level are temporary base stations, which mainly protect the signal from the climbing route to the peak, and will be demolished after the 2020 Mount Everest elevation measurement.

The relevant person in charge of China Mobile and Huawei introduced that this construction has broken through many technical and construction difficulties. The 5G base station at an altitude of 6500 meters has a drop of more than 2000 meters from the summit of Mount Everest. Therefore, all base stations use a minimalist base station product from Huawei, which can improve the coverage in the vertical dimension through beamforming technology and effectively cover the summit of Mount Everest. According to the site leader of Huawei, this technology is the world leader in 5G.

China Mobile has upgraded, renovated, maintained and strengthened the 177 km transmission trunk line around the Everest area and the node machine rooms along the line. Since the camps of Mount Everest are in the core area of the national nature reserve, large machinery cannot be used for equipment transportation. 8 tons of construction equipment are transported up the mountain by yak packs. The optical cable with a total length of 25 kilometers and a total weight of 600 kilograms is manually carried up the mountain.

Zhou Min, Secretary of the Party Committee and General Manager of China Mobile Tibet, said: "The company's cadres and employees have overcome difficulties such as high and low oxygen, broke through technical difficulties, and completed the deployment of 5G base stations at Mount Everest. The scientific and technological strength of China leading the development of 5G technology will also provide a strong communication guarantee for Mount Everest, scientific research, environmental monitoring, high-definition live broadcast and other activities. "

In addition to 5G signals, the Gigabit fiber network jointly deployed by China Mobile, Huawei, and Zunda has also been laid in three camps at 5,200 meters, 5,800 meters, and 6,500 meters above sea level. Use the network at the camp.

Mount Everest is located on the border between China and Nepal, and its northern side is located in Zhazong Township, Dingri County, Shigatse City, Tibet Autonomous Region. The Mount Everest Base Camp area includes two camps, which are the Tourist Base Camp located in the Rongbu Temple area and the Mountaineering Base Camp about 6 kilometers in front of the Tourist Base Camp.
