As deconfinement continues around the world, the Israeli authorities have authorized the return of tens of thousands of Palestinian workers to their territory. Nearly 50,000 of them are expected to be allowed to return to work in Israel from next Sunday. But this return must take place gradually.

With our correspondent in Jerusalem,

In March, Israel authorized nearly 70,000 Palestinian workers to remain on its territory, provided they do not return home. But the contamination of some, the calls for the Palestinian government to return and the holidays during the Jewish Passover led the majority of them to return to their homes.

As a sign that the deconfinement is continuing, nearly 50,000 Palestinians working in the construction, agricultural or industrial sectors should be allowed to resume their work in Israel from Sunday. But in order to avoid the usual crowds, everyone must respect a timetable for passing through the checkpoint. And workers will not be allowed to return home until Eid El Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan.

The return of these workers in March and April had been one of the sources of contamination in the West Bank. And this week, the Palestinian Prime Minister called for dialogue with the Israelis to allow them to return to work.

But contacted by RFI, neither the office of the Palestinian Prime Minister nor the branch of the Israeli army in charge of work permits declined to comment on a possible coordination on this subject.
