481 million losses in the first quarter, against a background of coronavirus and almost zero air traffic. Airbus is going through a big breath of air, as its CEO Guillaume Faury repeated this Thursday on RTL.

"We lost a third of our industrial activity in a few weeks, said the boss of the European aircraft manufacturer," who expects "one or two years of very, very reduced activities."

Boeing slashes workforce

To cope with this situation, Airbus has so far resorted to “short-term and reversible measures”, such as short-time working or the reduction of production. Its American competitor Boeing announced Wednesday a reduction of approximately 10% of its workforce worldwide, that is to say the departure of 16,000 employees by the end of the year. Could Airbus also make layoffs? "We are not there yet," said Guillaume Faury.

But serious threats are hanging over the future of an aeronautical industry which employs “350,000 people” in France, mainly in subcontractors.
