  • Coronavirus. Almost a million self-employed today receive unemployment benefits for a minimum amount of 661 euros

Social Security will pay at the end of this month a second payment of the exceptional benefit for self-employed people affected by the conoronavirus crisis. It will be the stoppage of the corresponding part from April 14 to 30 , so the self-employed workers who already received the first payment will receive 17 days of benefit. But also, those self-employed who could not prove before the previous payment that they are indeed entitled to the benefit, will also receive the previous 30 days. That is, they will charge a total of 47 days , so the minimum figure they will enter will be around 1,000 euros.

In this way, and as sources of the Association of Autonomous Workers (ATA) advance to this newspaper and confirm from the Ministry of Social Security, the Government prevents those workers who were unable to prove in time the closure of their business or the fall of 75% of their income as a result of the coronavirus have to wait until next month to collect the benefit. In that case, these workers would have faced the payment of the March and April quotas with their businesses closed or with almost no activity and without receiving any payment in the form of unemployment .

With the measure, however, these freelancers must continue to pay the fee, the minimum amount of which is 283 euros, but they will have access to the exceptional benefit. And from the second half of May they will begin to receive the refund of this quota since the unemployment developed by the Government entails the exoneration of these payments.

In addition, the group of self-employed persons who are entitled to the benefit will receive a third payment at the end of May, corresponding to the 31st day, and which will therefore have a minimum amount of 661, as the norm decrees. And at that time, self-employed workers who had not been able to demonstrate the aforementioned requirements until then would receive a 77-day benefit, although it is estimated that very few self-employed workers will reach this in this situation.

1.4 million beneficiaries

According to the estimates of the Minister of Security, José Luis Escrivá, the exceptional benefit will benefit nearly 1.4 million self-employed. Of these, just over 900,000 own-account workers have already received the first benefit payment on Friday, April 17. From ATA they expect that the vast majority of the remaining 600,000 self-employed workers will go into unemployment with the benefit that will be paid at the end of the month.
