• LAST MINUTE: Information about the coronavirus

The president of Banco Santander, Ana Botín , has asked the Government to plan "as soon as possible" the revival of economic and social activity to avoid an even more drastic impact due to the coronavirus crisis. "We must plan as soon as possible the return to work, of the youngest and those who are already immunized, and at the same time ensure that the most vulnerable to the disease remain protected," he proposed in his speech at the shareholders' meeting that the bank celebrates this Friday telematically.

Botín stressed that this return to normality must be carried out through the collaboration of authorities and the private sector, just as "some countries that are ahead have done it."

The Santander president has celebrated some of the measures put in place by the Government and the European Commission to mitigate the impact of the crisis and provide liquidity to the groups most affected by the destruction of employment and the paralysis of economic activity.

In this sense, the bank has reiterated its ability to support society at the moment and has highlighted that, facing the 2008 crisis, financial institutions are now "part of the solution" due to their greater strength.

As an example, Botín has justified the suspension of the dividend payment against the 2019 and 2020 financial years due to the "super situation" of the coronavirus and the request for financial prudence made by the European Central Bank (ECB). This decision will allow the entity to grant more than 90,000 million euros in loans to ensure the liquidity of its clients.
