• Economic 'hibernation': the coronavirus crisis claims 833,979 jobs in March and marks the worst month in the history of the Spanish labor market
  • Economic 'hibernation': Coronavirus in Spain, last minute

The affiliation data that the Ministry of Social Security has published today already confirm the very serious impact that the coronavirus is having on older citizens: the number of pensioners fell in March by 8,377 people . The figures show that, specifically, the total number went from 8,904,789 to 8,896,412 pensioners, which represents a very high reduction compared to both the previous months and the evolution in the same period of previous years.

In February, for example, there was an increase of 6,810 pensioners , while between December and January the increase was 77 people. If the comparison is carried out to the evolution between February 2019, that is, the same period last year it is observed that there was also a reduction, but much less important than that of the last month: 2,300 fewer pensioners compared to 8,300 this year. year .

And going back a little more and observing what the evolution was in 2017 and 2018, it is verified that between the months of February and March of those years there were strong increases of 11,510 and 9,071 retirees, respectively.

Therefore, it seems evident that the Social Security data already shows a notable reduction in pensioners directly related and conditioned by the high number of deaths that the coronavirus pandemic is causing . And those figures, as the data on both deaths and those of Social Security itself, which in many cases will not have yet accounted for all the deaths in their records, threaten to increase.
