"Exceptional and massive partial unemployment" measures

Emmanuel Macron announced Thursday an "exceptional and massive" mechanism to "protect employees and businesses" in the face of the coronavirus epidemic, after Medef's requests for emergency measures. "From the coming days, an exceptional and massive mechanism of partial unemployment will be implemented" which will go "much further" than the announcements already made by the government to "preserve jobs and skills", said the president.

"The state will pay compensation to employees forced to stay at home," he said, pledging to protect employees and companies "whatever it costs", without giving further details on the cost of the measures announced. "I want us to be able to protect our independents as well, and therefore we will take all the measures necessary to give this guarantee economically."

The President of the Republic also announced the postponement of contributions and taxes due in March by companies.
