The latest generation of the Peugeot 208, a city car in petrol, diesel or electric versions, was designated this Monday as the European car of the year. It is the third time in seven years that the French lion brand has won this award, created in 1964.

"We are very very happy to be honored," reacted Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO of Peugeot (PSA group), by videoconference during the awards ceremony held behind closed doors in Geneva (Switzerland). “We will immediately let our customers know. This price is traditionally awarded the day before the press days of the Geneva Motor Show. The event was canceled this year due to the coronavirus epidemic.

Offer electricity without taking risks

The special feature of the Peugeot 208 is that it is available in both thermal and electric engines. The PSA group (Citroën, DS, Opel, Vauxhall) has chosen so-called “multi-energy” technical platforms to offer customers electrification for all of its new models. This makes it possible to produce several versions on the same assembly line, reducing the risks faced with the uncertainty of demand for electric cars.

Peugeot has already been rewarded in 2014 for the compact sedan 308 and in 2017 for the SUV 3008, two models that have had a good commercial career. The Peugeot 208, the best-selling car in France since the start of the year, succeeds the Jaguar I-Pace, a 100% electric luxury SUV elected in 2019.
