By throwing in the towel, Mohamed Tawfik Allawi denounced the obstruction of political parties, he said, more interested in their own interests than those of the country.

The parliamentarians rejected for the third time the composition of the government he proposed. Mohamed Allawi had been appointed as Prime Minister to try to get Iraq out of a serious political and social crisis, which forced his predecessor Adel Abdel Mahdi to resign in November 2019.

For the past five months, young people have been on the streets demanding a total system change. They denounce the corruption of the elites, the dilapidated public services and the lack of work. The protests were severely repressed: more than 500 people were killed and 30,000 injured.
