In addition to small popular cinemas, huge multiplexes are driving up the price of cinema tickets. - IStock / City Presse

If cinema has always been a popular cultural pastime, many fans today think twice before taking the step of a dark room because of the entry prices.

In the past ten years, the ticket price has indeed increased by 8%. But, contrary to popular belief, it did not exceed 10 euros. According to the National Cinema Center (CNC), the average cost of a seat reached 6.64 euros in 2018.

High-end rooms

Where does this impression come from? The explanation is to be sought from the rise of high-tech multiplexes, which monetized their immersive technologies and their themed rooms. At an entry price of around 12 or 13 euros, you must add an additional 2 to 6 euros depending on whether you want to watch a session in 3D, Dolby Cinema, ScreenX or even enjoy the special effects of 4DX thanks to a mobile chair that moves, vibrates and can even project air during the film. In the end, you have to pay between a dozen and more than fifteen euros for your ticket.

As 60 million consumers recently indicated, premium spaces, including unlimited drinks, cost up to 35 euros at the Europacorp La Joliette multiplex in Marseille.

This move upmarket necessarily excludes some of the spectators. In its 2018 assessment, the CNC thus notes that the working classes go to the cinema less than three times a year, compared to six times for the upper social categories and seven times for the retired. And the association regrets that "the cinema creates its first class for silver consumers".
