Consumers reported that they bought gold jewelery from brands in the jewelry business, and when they were resold, they were surprised that their price was less than 60% of the purchase price, with the store stipulating that the consumer purchase other jewelery, and deducting the price of the sold jewelery from its price.

They demanded that the gold shop, in a prominent place, clearly announce its resale policy.

On the other hand, two responsible managers in two gold stores said that some jewelery is sold in pieces, and on the basis of distinct shapes and designs, and not only on the basis of the price or weight of gold, explaining that some consumers are not interested in inquiring about the weight of gold or price, in the event of sale or exchange.

They pointed out that the requirement to buy jewelry when reselling the used gold is a method used by a number of stores to stimulate sales.

A retail expert called for a separate law or system for gold trade that regulates the relationship between the consumer and the merchant, and preserves the rights of each.

For its part, the Ministry of Economy said that forcing consumers to buy jewelry to sell used gold is in violation of the Consumer Protection Law, and is also an exploitation of consumers.

Little mony

In detail, the consumer Amr Al Saadi said that he bought, two months ago, two small earrings for his two children from one of the famous brands in the field of jewelry, for 1,000 dirhams, but a small part of them had fallen and went to the store to fix them.

He explained that the shop official informed him that he no longer had the same model, so he decided to sell them, and the store manager offered him 100 dirhams a price for both earrings, and that he would give him this amount provided that he would buy other gold jewelery from the store and deduct the amount from its price.

Al-Saadi expressed his dissatisfaction with being forced to buy gold jewelry against his will, so that the price of the earrings would be deducted, at the same time wondering how to buy the shop two earrings for only 100 dirhams, even though their original price was 1000 dirhams.

He demanded that the gold shop announce, clearly and prominently, its resale policy, in which case the consumer accepts or refuses, according to this policy, and is not surprised by that when reselling.

The consumer, Mai Omran, said that she bought a gold kit from one of the famous brands in the field of jewelry for 12 thousand dirhams, and after several months she wanted to sell it. She explained that she was surprised at the store refusing to buy it, unless she bought gold jewelry from the same store, and the price of the kit was deducted from it, indicating that she refused, and retracted the idea of resale.

She added that she was shocked when the responsible manager told her that the price of the kit is 5,000 dirhams, 58% less than the purchase price, despite the high price of a gram of gold during the last period, noting that buying gold is a safe haven for the future.

And it demanded that the gold shop, in a prominent and clearly prominent place, announce its resale policy, in which case the consumer accepts or rejects, according to this policy.

Gold jewelry

The consumer Alia Saeed Abdullah said that she bought gold jewelry from one of the gold stores, at a price of approximately 4000 dirhams, several months ago, and when she wanted to resell it to buy new jewelry from another store he refused to buy it, except in the case of buying new jewelry from the same store, specifying the selling price The jewelry is only 1500 dirhams, 62% less than the purchase price.

And it demanded that the store announce in a prominent place and clearly its resale policy, in this case the consumer accepts or rejects, according to this policy.

Shapes and designs

Fares Idris, the manager in charge of a gold store, said that “some jewelery is sold by the piece, and on the basis of distinct forms and designs, and not only on the basis of the price of gold, or the weight of the gold in it,” explaining that some consumers buy what they like, without inquiring about the weight Gold or price in the event of sale or exchange, and when they come to sell or exchange know some facts for the first time, problems arise because they do not understand the shop’s policy, and that the price of gold is not the only criterion in determining the price, in addition to that the price of gold changes quickly, according to global changes .

He pointed out that the issue of requiring the purchase of new jewelry, to accept the resale of used jewelry, is a mechanism used by a number of stores to stimulate sales in some circumstances, such as declining sales operations.

Muhammad Akhtar, the manager in charge of another gold trading store, agreed with him that some of the shops used this mechanism to stimulate sales.

He explained that some brands sell pieces with distinctive global designs that are not present anywhere, and the price is determined on the basis of additional factors, such as the name of the brand, and distinct designs that are not the same in the market, and not only on the basis of the price or weight of gold.

He noted that the consumer bears the responsibility of purchasing, and getting acquainted with all information related to what he is buying.

Separate law

For his part, the retail expert, Ibrahim Al-Bahr, called for the development of a separate law or system for the gold trade, which regulates the relationship between the consumer and the merchant, and preserves the rights of each of them, given that the gold trade has a special status, compared to the rest of the retail trade, to which a law applies Consumer protection and executive regulations, rather than some merchants implement their own policies regarding purchase, replacement, and repurchase.

The sea drew attention to the need for a culture among the consumer who buys gold, that there are two types of gold: the first: it is sold on the basis of weight, and is an investment when reselling it, and the second price depends on the basis of the form and different models, in which case the consumer may lose a large part of his money When reselling it.

He pointed out the importance of asking the consumer before buying about everything related to gold, and how to determine the price that will be obtained in the event of resale or exchange, especially as there are shops that do not take the gold that is bought from other stores.

Used jewelry

In turn, the director of the Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy, Dr. Hashem Al-Nuaimi, said, “Forcing consumers to buy new jewelry, to agree to buy used jewelry, is in violation of the Consumer Protection Law, and is also an exploitation of consumers.” He explained that it is not the merchant’s right to require purchasing New gold, in exchange for agreeing to accept the used gold.

Al-Naimi called on consumers not to accept this condition, whatever the reasons, indicating that the consumer is not obligated to accept the merchant’s condition, and demanding consumers to submit complaints to the Ministry of Economy, to obtain their right to resell without any conditions.

Gold local manager: Some artifacts are sold based on shape and design, not according to price or weight.

Gold weight

The Director of the Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy, Dr. Hashem Al-Nuaimi, called on consumers to learn about the weight of gold in gold jewelery before buying, and know how to calculate the price, because some brands determine the selling price of jewelery by piece and on the basis of design and shapes, while exploiting the well-known brand name of the company in a way Essential, not on the basis of a little gold weight, and thus the consumer loses a lot when reselling.

He pointed out that the consumer bears the responsibility for his decision to buy, so he must know all aspects of the commodity before buying.
