Air France-KLM expects an extra cost item of up to 200 million euros in the first quarter of 2020 due to the corona virus. The company reports this in an explanation of the figures for 2019.

Both KLM and Air France have suspended their flights to China due to the corona crisis. KLM will fly to Beijing and Shanghai no later than mid-March. Flights to another Chinese destination have been suspended even further.

This is a blow especially for KLM. Dutch society is one of the largest carriers between Europe and China, both for passengers and for freight.

The KLM figures for January did not show any effect of that measure - the number of passengers to China even increased. But CEO Pieter Elbers already made it clear at the announcement that there are major consequences ahead. KLM annually converts 1.5 billion euros into flights to and from China. A temporary stop like this can cost the company millions per month.
