The United Arab Emirates launches the first nuclear power plant in the Arab world

The United Arab Emirates has authorized the commissioning of its first nuclear power plant. Composed of four reactors, this plant is the first in the Arab world.

This Monday, February 17, the country's permanent representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Hamad Alkaabi , announced that the United Arab Emirates had given the green light to the start-up of their nuclear power plant located in Barakah , in the west of the country.
" The Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority (FANR) has approved the issuance (...) of the operating license for reactor 1 of the plant, " said Hamad Alkaabi at a press conference in Abu Dhabi, adding that it will start up in the " near future "

The first of the four reactors, which will be operated and maintained by the Nawah Energy Company, was to be commissioned in 2017 but the date had been postponed due to safety conditions. The manufacturing cost of the plant is estimated at 24.4 billion dollars (22.5 billion euros).
Once operational, the plant will produce 5,600 megawatts of electricity, or about 25% of the needs of the United Arab Emirates. " This is a historic moment for the United Arab Emirates (...) thus crowning the 12-year effort to build (...) this peaceful nuclear program to meet the country's future energy needs ", s congratulated Mr. Alkaabi.
