The number of university students who do not immediately start a Master's degree after completing their Bachelor's degree has more than doubled in the last ten years, according to figures from the Education Executive Agency (DUO) that Pointer and Fris! have requested. According to the employers' organization VNO-NCW and the National Student Union (LSVb), the study break deteriorates on the labor market if they do not complete their diploma.

For many students, the study delay has anyway adverse consequences for the further career, thinks the LSVb, "because after a break it is difficult to resume study". Since 2006, more than 37,000 students would not have gone ahead immediately or ignored a master's degree.

In 2018, 26.5 percent of all university students opted to temporarily stop the study, while it was less than 12 percent ten years earlier. Completing a bachelor's degree does not yet provide the group of students with a university final diploma. This is earned after completing a master's degree.

The LSVb and VNO-NCW tell Pointer that obtaining a master's degree is essential. "Due to the high degree of competition on the labor market, completing the study is the minimum."

'Study is being stopped to polish up your CV'

By temporarily stopping their studies, students try to polish their CV, the journalistic platform writes on the basis of DUO. For example, students would temporarily sit on the board of student associations or choose an extra internship.

In addition, students choose to stop their studies temporarily and look for a job to save for the rest of their studies.
