In late January, Boeing announced for the first time in more than two decades a net loss of $ 636 million due to the setbacks of its 737 MAX. Airbus, its European competitor, also had to face difficulties in 2019 with financial consequences. The aircraft manufacturer announced a net loss of 1.36 billion euros last year, weighed down by fines of 3.6 billion in a corruption case and a new charge of 1.2 billion on the A400M, its military aircraft program.

These results "reflect the final agreements concluded with the authorities to close compliance surveys (compliance, Editor's note), as well as a charge related to the revision of our export contract forecasts for the A400M," said Guillaume Faury. , the executive chairman of Airbus in a press release while the group's annual results conference is due to take place on Thursday morning.

On January 31, an agreement with the French, British and American judicial authorities to avoid prosecution in a corruption case on the sidelines of the conclusion of contracts. In total, the fines were set at 3.598 billion euros.

Revenues up 11%

Despite the delivery of 14 A400Ms last year, this program is far from balanced and recorded a charge of 1.2 billion euros because “export ambitions are proving increasingly difficult to reach for the initial contractual phase ", in particular" due to the repeated extension of the export ban from Germany to Saudi Arabia "decreed after the assassination of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi indicates Airbus.

The upcoming A380 shutdown is also responsible for an exceptional charge of 202 million euros. Without these difficulties, Airbus advances an operating profit of 6.9 billion euros and a turnover of 70.5 billion euros in 2019, up 11%.

The aircraft manufacturer thus delivered 863 commercial aircraft in 2019, against 800 the previous year and plans to deliver "about 880" this year. Thanks in particular to the A320neo family, its flagship program which records 6,249 orders, the value of the order book is estimated at 471 billion.
