The competition authority has given the green light to the grouping of bank cards to increase the commission charged by the banks for each withdrawal of money from the distributor. This information was revealed on Tuesday by the daily Les Échos. Bank customers, particularly those of online banks, could therefore pay more by withdrawing cash.

Withdrawing cash from the ATM may soon be more expensive. The competition authority has given the green light to the grouping of bank cards concerning an increase in the commission that the banks charge each other with each withdrawal, according to information revealed Tuesday by the daily Les Échos .

Increase from 57 to 89 cents

With each withdrawal from the distributor, a commission is indeed charged. It is usually paid for by your own bank. Established today at 57 cents, it will drop to 89 cents.

Conventional banks, which rely on a network of branches and have ATMs, do not charge this commission to their customers in general, whether the withdrawal is made to one of their distributors or to one of their competitors. In the latter case, exceptions may however exist, for example beyond 5 or 6 withdrawals per month.

A cost of two billion euros per year

The cost of this commission system represents two billion euros per year according to the Banque de France. According to Les Echos, classic banks have been demanding this increase for several months to "optimize the costs of their networks" in the face of the arrival of online banks which, without having their own distributors, resemble stowaways .

For the moment, no one confirms this hypothesis. But customers of online banks may well endure the higher commission on bill withdrawals. It would not be surprising if conventional banks asked these new banks to pay more. They are free to pass this cost on to their customers or not. Several, whose model is still fragile, could be tempted by the first option.
