Chinese employers offer their employees longer New Year holidays or let them work from home to curb the further spread of the corona virus.
The holiday for the celebration of Chinese New Year is extended by three days until 2 February. Stores are temporarily closed and events are canceled. Wuhan, the city where the corona virus first broke out, is almost completely locked. The freedom of movement is also considerably reduced in other cities.
Many companies advise employees who want to leave from Wuhan or the province of Hubei to stay at home in quarantine. The Hong Kong Stock Exchange has canceled a festive ceremony for the first trading day of the year in connection with the corona virus.
Hong Kong previously announced that residents of Hubei will no longer be welcome in the administrative region from Monday. In Suzhou, an area in eastern China where many pharmaceutical companies and tech groups are located, many companies keep their doors closed until at least 8 February.
E-commerce giant Alibaba stopped selling mouth masks through the Taobao platform, because prices went through the roof.
