Travix, the parent company of among others CheapTickets and Vliegwinkel, has been taken over by the Chinese company Trip.com. That is what director John Mangelaars said in a BNR broadcast on Friday.
The Chinese travel giant takes over Travix from BCD Group, the family business of owner John Fentener van Vlissingen. The company was not available for a response.
In addition to CheapTickets and Vliegwinkel.nl, Travix also includes Vayama, Flugladen and BudgetAir. The company is active in 39 countries and has offices in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The sale was already sealed before Christmas and is still awaiting permission from the regulators and the works council.
Travix becomes ' stepping stone ' for the Chinese
According to director Mangelaars there were two other interested parties. The choice for the Chinese is due to their technological knowledge. "We didn't need any money," Mangelaars told BNR .
For Trip.com, Travix is a " stepping stone " in the tourism industry in the western world, says Mangelaars. The Chinese company is already active worldwide with travel brands such as Skyscanner, Ctrip and Qunar.
The director of Trip.com, Jane Jie Sun, was recently named by Forbes as one of the world's most powerful women in 2019.
