Nearly 3 million euros in damage caused by fake advertisements with Dutch celebrities in 2019

In 2019, there were 332 victims with a compensation of 2,916,555 euros. That is a considerable increase: in 2018, 39 victims reported to the Fraud Help Desk. They suffered a total of 776,642 euros in damages.

Especially in the past year, more and more counter advertisements are popping up in which the names and images of Alexander Klöpping, Ruud Feltkamp and Matthijs van Nieuwkerk are being misused. The design of media such as the NOS and NU.nl have also been used by fraudsters.

John de Mol started a lawsuit against Facebook in 2019 because of the fake advertisements. In November the Amsterdam court ruled that Facebook should remove fake advertisements with the name and image of De Mol.

The court ordered Facebook to pay a penalty of 1.1 million euros if the company does not actively combat the advertisements. But the social medium says they cannot meet all requirements. Facebook has therefore appealed.
