Masdar City, the sustainable urban community in Abu Dhabi, has announced a new record in the Guinness Book of Records by creating the world's largest mosaic of recyclable materials.
The size of the board is 1015 square meters, equivalent to the area of two basketball courts. It took a whole month to form and used 90,500 recyclable materials, which included plastic bottles, metal containers and carton boxes.
The painting was attended by employees and residents of Masdar City, as well as people from the local community and school students in Abu Dhabi.
This artwork, which was officially unveiled ahead of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2020, aims to encourage the citizens of the UAE and its visitors and residents on its soil to adopt responsible practices towards the environment and motivate them to reduce waste, recycle and use it.
The painting embodies the march of the Emirates between the past and the present, and highlights a number of landmarks in the seven emirates.
Today, special ceremonies were held in the city of Masdar, during which the Guinness Book representatives granted the City of Guinness World Record Certificate in the presence of executives and a number of government officials.
“As a sustainable and pioneering urban complex, Masdar City will continue to play an important role in stimulating the adoption of best practices in relation to waste management,” said Youssef Basilib, Executive Director of the Department of Sustainable Urban Development at Masdar.
He added: This mosaic embodies an innovative way to employ art as a global language to show the possibility of translating the concept of sustainability into a concrete application on the ground as well as it reflects the commitment of the Emirati society to work to protect the environment.
He emphasized that sustainability is a collective responsibility that requires the contribution of every person. Therefore, Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week focuses, through its multiple activities, on enhancing the participation and contribution of all segments of the local community.
The painting will be displayed in Masdar City and can be viewed through the viewing platform within the city.
It is noteworthy that Masdar City will showcase its growing portfolio of projects in the field of sustainable real estate development through its pavilion at the World Future Energy Summit which will be held from 13 to 16 January and is one of the main events within the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2020.
