The Minister of Economy Bruno Le Maire - THOMAS HERICOURT / SIPA

The French Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, announces the inauguration on January 24 of a Franco-German pilot factory for batteries for electric cars in Nersac (Charente), in an interview at the JDD this Sunday. The industrialist Saft already has a production unit in this city on the outskirts of Angoulême.

This production site should generate 200 jobs according to the minister. More, according to the president of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region Alain Rousset, who is counting rather on "300 to 400.". Then in 2022, "a production site will see the light of day with PSA", completes Bruno Le Maire.

The project to build a European sector of batteries for electric cars - which account for a significant part of the added value of these new engines - was launched almost two years ago.

An "Airbus of batteries"

At the beginning of December, the European Commission gave the green light to this "Airbus of batteries" with the payment of a colossal aid of 3.2 billion euros, by seven Member States including Germany and France, to a consortium of 17 companies.

In September, after the 50th Franco-German Economic and Financial Council in Bercy, the French Minister and his German counterpart Peter Altmaier said that Opel, Peugeot, Total and Saft were associated with this first project.

They also said that "the first manufacturing plant, which represents 2,000 jobs, will be installed in France in 2022" then the second "in Germany in 2024".
