The final stretch of the year and the difficulties in guaranteeing support are forcing the Government to leave for the last moment an increasingly long list of decisions of great importance. Some of them even promised, as is the case of the pension update with the CPI before the end of the year.

The number 1 of the social commitments with which the PSOE was presented to the elections of November 10 was entitled, "Protected pensions every year and forever." After advancing that the benefits will be shielded in the Constitution, the PSOE promised to update the 2020 pensions in accordance with the real CPI "next December." It was Pedro Sánchez himself who presented this commitment on October 7 in Madrid.

On this same point, the acting president and socialist leader proposed "fair pensions means shielding the public pension system in the Constitution, addressing reforms that guarantee its sustainability and sufficiency, updating them in accordance with the real CPI and increasing minimum pensions and non-contributory, in attention to social dialogue and within the framework of the Toledo Pact ".

Sanchez maintained this commitment during the election campaign, and his promises even caused complaints from officials' unions. The reason is that while the acting president did guarantee the increase in benefits, he did not do the same, or at least so bluntly, with the salary of public workers.

Now, the political agenda product of those same elections in which Sanchez considered that of Catalonia a problem of coexistence rather than political, seems to be interfering in this commitment, in which the Government has been working since September. The Minister of Labor, Magdalena Valerio, said today that it is still to be decided if the pension increase of 0.25% is suspended and 0.9% is raised in 2020, as the Government promised, before it ends year.

"It is still to be decided"

Although the head of the agency that manages pensions has reaffirmed her commitment to be revalued with the CPI, she has admitted that it is in the air that can be done before January. Specifically, asked if the fact that there is no government will lead to pensions rising in 2020 according to the revaluation index, which sets the rise of 0.25%, Valerio has remarked that "it depends on whether it is decided to keep the Article 58 of the General Law of Social Security where this index is collected or suspend its application and raise them by 0.9% "in line with the Executive's commitment.

" This is still to be decided , just as if it is done before the end of the year," said the head of the Ministry of Labor, after making clear that the rise in this benefit under inflation is a commitment of the current Government and of the PSOE.

The Government knows that no political party would dare to oppose this measure, which benefits 10 million pensioners. In case there is any legal or competence problem because it is a functioning Government, the minister recalled that relating pensions to the real CPI was the only issue on which there was clear pre-agreement at the Toledo Pact table. He has also insisted again that the commitment, and thus was recorded in the Budget Plan sent to Brussels, is that this year it has increased 0.9% in pensions. "
