• R3 and R5. Promotion expels Abertis from the traffic management of broken highways
  • Promotion: The nine rescued highways will be free at night and will go down 30% for the rest of the day

Abertis has signed with the UGT and USO the employment regulation file (ERE) agreed last week for 136 workers on the two highways that on December 31 end their concession contract and, as agreed by the Ministry of Development, will raise their toll and they will return to the State , according to the group.

The agreement, ratified in the assembly of workers, involves reducing the initially proposed one by four employees. However, it is equivalent to almost half (45.3%) of the total workforce of 300 that add up the two tracks, the AP-4 motorway between Seville and Cádiz and the AP-7 motorway section between Tarragona, Valencia and Alicante

The employees affected by the ERE are those linked to the toll collection works of the highways , since those not included in the adjustment, those related to the maintenance of the infrastructure, are expected to be subrogated in the conservation contract that Firm Promotion.

Regarding compensation for those affected, it has been agreed to apply the maximum provided by law, 45 days per year worked with a cap of 42 months during the years of seniority of workers prior to 2012, and 33 days per year with a maximum of 34 months for the exercises worked from that year.

In addition, the company and the unions have agreed on other complementary measures for those affected, such as the application of medical insurance for a year, or a special agreement for those affected with 55 or more years until they reach 63 years.

The two sections of the AP-7 between Tarragona and Alicante and the AP-4 Sevilla-Cádiz will follow the trail of the AP-1 Burgos-Armiñón on January 1, which in December 2018 became the first payment route built in Spain that ended its concession, lifted the toll barriers and returned to the State.

The reversal of the highways that conclude their concession contract takes place by virtue of the decision of the Government currently in charge of not extending the concession terms of this type of infrastructure.

In the case of the AP-4, the measure to suppress the toll will benefit the 25,200 vehicles that circulate on the highway daily . In the case of the AP-7, it has 23,469 users per day on the stretch between Tarragona and Valencia, and another 20,844 on the route between Valencia and Alicante .

The State assumes maintenance

However, the State will proceed to make and pay for the maintenance of the highways, which Abertis is now in charge of. Development has already put out to tender the contracts to carry out these works , which amount to 153 million euros, and are still pending adjudication.

The policy of the Executive in this matter of highway and highways is contemplated with its willingness to open a global debate to determine a financing model of the country's road network, mainly to meet maintenance needs.

For Abertis, the country's first highway concessionaire, the measure means losing two of its main assets in Spain . The group expects to compensate for their departure with the purchase of a Mexican highway company that recently announced.
