The Netherlands Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) fined an unknown company because employees of the company quickly left WhatsApp groups and removed chats during a raid. The company receives a fine of 1.84 million euros for this.
According to the ACM, the employees prevented an investigation by deleting the messages, which according to the authority are prohibited.
The company acknowledges that employees have incorrectly left WhatsApp groups and deleted chats. The company subsequently fully cooperated in the investigation of the removed material, in a way that goes beyond what is legally required, reports the market authority. That is why the proposed fine is 20 percent lower.
The ACM investigated the company because of a possible violation of competition laws. It is not known which company it is and what the research is all about. The authority will disclose the name of the company when the investigation is complete.
