Germany called sanctions against Nord Stream 2 attack on EU

Possible US sanctions against Nord Stream 2 are directed against EU sovereignty and call into question the achievement of agreements following the Norman summit in Paris.

This was reported by the press service of the Eastern Committee of the German Economy.

“If these sanctions are introduced, it will be a direct attack on EU sovereignty and a fatal signal for a settlement effort in Paris,” said Oliver Hermes, chairman of the Eastern Committee.

He noted that measures on the American side could also “jeopardize the ongoing process of detente between Ukraine and Russia”, become more than an “unfriendly act”, and cause “serious damage to transatlantic relations.”

However, Hermes noted the implementation of the EU issuing all permits for the launch of the gas pipeline, as well as the adoption of appropriate regulation for operation.

In December, it became known that Washington was going to achieve the imposition of sanctions against European companies that are involved in the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project.

US Senator Chris Murphy said the US Senate intends to soon pass a bill aimed at combating Russia's energy influence in Europe.

According to Bloomberg, under the possible sanctions of the United States against the participants of the Nord Stream - 2 vessels that participate in the construction of the pipeline, and the leaders of the companies associated with them may fall.
