Japan's first facial authentication ticket gate Osaka Metro will introduce tomorrow Demonstration test December 9 17:20

Osaka Metro was the first railway company in Japan to introduce a system that can pass ticket gates without using a ticket or IC card, and a prototype was installed at the station on the 9th.

A prototype of a ticket gate with face recognition was installed at the Chimezaki Station in Osaka Metro Dome.

The sensor attached to the ticket gate reads information such as the user's face outline and eye / mouth balance, and determines whether it matches the pre-registered facial photo features.

Prototypes cannot be properly authenticated if a part of their face is hidden by masks or sunglasses, but Osaka Metro will conduct demonstration experiments with employees at prototypes installed at four stations from 10th to September next year. Through such improvements, we will introduce face recognition systems at all stations in FY2024.

A system that passes ticket gates using only face authentication without using a ticket or IC card has already been introduced in China, but this is the first time for a railway operator in Japan.

Tickets and IC cards can still be used after the introduction, but in the future Osaka Metro wants to manage all passengers getting on and off with only face recognition.

“We want to eliminate the hassle of holding an IC card by adopting the latest technology and aim for a more convenient and comfortable railroad for customers”, “Osaka City High-Speed Electric Tramway” operating Osaka Metro It was.
