The question of how safe the Uber service in the United States already has an answer. After years of growing social pressure, the Californian transportation company has released a report detailing the number of sexual assaults reported during its service in the last two years: about 6000 .

The report is as extensive as it is worrisome and divides sexual incidents into 21 categories , including a total of 235 rapes in 2018 alone and thousands of other types of assaults. The number of complaints between 2017 and 2018 is 5,981, incidents ranging from rape to unwanted touching and kissing of both passengers and drivers.

They are not alone. Its main competition in the US, Lyft , has had to deal with 34 lawsuits from women in San Francisco who claim to have been raped while using their shared transportation system.

The Uber data adheres to the first world power and also account for the number of deaths during those trips. In those two years, 109 people lost their lives aboard a car with the company sticker and another 19 died in assaults while traveling or just after using the service.

The report comes to light after an increase in the number of criticisms of the company for its lack of transparency in different chapters such as security of service and the thousands of drivers that make up its network, in addition to its way of dealing with complaints of the users.

Despite the seriousness of the data, the report reflects that this kind of incident is just happening. 99.9% of the trips ended without any problem . In those two years the amount of trips exceeded 2.3 billion only on US soil.

"On the scale at which Uber operates, we will see both the best and the worst of what happens in this society because we are operating many trips every day," said Tony West , the head of the company's legal department based in San Francisco.

West says that what happens on those trips is proof that sexual assaults are much more frequent in American society than people think. "That exists in companies, in classrooms, on university campuses and in houses. Uber is not immune to it ."
