At a joint press conference on Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron and his US counterpart Donald Trump said they could settle their dispute over the Gafa tax. This tax is causing tensions between the two countries, especially since the beginning of the week.

Meeting in London on Tuesday, the US and French presidents were optimistic about their ability to find a solution for the Gafa tax. "We have a minor dispute, I think we will probably be able to overcome it," said Donald Trump, joined by Emmanuel Macron: "I think that with President Trump we can resolve this situation."

The US Trade Representative (USTR) recently concluded that this French legislation called "Gafa" (Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon)? taxing these companies to 3% of their turnover in France, harmed US companies and advocated a response.

An "unacceptable" surcharge on French products

On Monday, the United States had revealed a list of French products on which they envisaged additional tariffs of up to 100% if France persisted in wanting to implement the tax. Champagne, leather goods or even roquefort were concerned by these potential surcharges. Bruno Le Maire, the Finance Minister, denounced an "unacceptable" decision and called for a "strong response" from the European Union.

The conference is part of a summit for 70 years of NATO, on which the two heads of state also disagree, following the words of President Macron.
