Since the US operation in Syria that marked the death of the leader of the Islamic State group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Turkish police have been multiplying anti-terrorist operations across the country.

It had been several months since Turkey had carried out an operation of such magnitude against the alleged cells of the Islamic State group on its territory. According to Ankara police chief, the capital, about 100 people accused of being linked to the terrorist organization were arrested in 21 provinces. They are suspected of planning attacks on the celebrations of the Republic Day, a Turkish national holiday, held on October 29, 2019.

Operations throughout the country

Ankara, Istanbul, Mersin, Bursa ... Since the beginning of the week, Turkish police have been carrying out daily anti-terrorist raids targeting alleged members of the Islamic State group. The intelligence services are worried about possible retaliation for the death of its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi . Turkey, which claims to have contributed to the US operation, has been a priority target for the organization for years. More than 300 people have died in nine attacks since 2014.

According to the Turkish authorities, the police have conducted more than 2,000 anti-Islamic State operations over the last four years. More than 1,200 people were sentenced for their links with the group, half of them foreign nationals.
