The turnover of the industry fell 3.6% last August compared to the same month of 2018, while the order entries of the sector plummeted 4.5%, according to data released Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With the interannual data for August, both billing and industry orders return at negative rates after having increased 3.1% in July in both cases.

Corrected the calendar effect and seasonality, the industry turnover decreased 0.6% year-on-year in August, one point less than in July, while orders fell 1.9%, rate 2.8 points lower than that of the previous month.

In monthly terms (August over July) and correcting the seasonality and calendar effect, the industry's turnover rose 0.4% , its best monthly data since April, while the order entries advanced 0.7%, as opposed to the 0.3% decline experienced the previous month.

SALES AND ORDERS OF ENERGY DISPLACED 15%

By industrial sectors, energy was the one that cut the most sales in the eighth month of the year, with a year-on-year fall of 15%. It was followed, although at a great distance, intermediate goods (-4.9%), consumer durables (-3.5%) and non-durable consumer goods (+ 0.5%). Only capital goods increased their sales in August, with an increase of 0.8% year-on-year.

By autonomous communities, the turnover of the industry decreased in 14 of them, especially in the Balearic Islands (-12.6%) and the Valencian Community (-9.7%), and only increased in Aragon (+ 1.2% ), Castilla y León (+ 0.8%) and Catalonia (+ 0.2%).

In terms of orders, energy also registered the highest year-on-year decline in August, 15.1%, followed by capital goods (-6%), consumer durables (-5.2%), goods intermediate (-3.9%) and non-durable consumer goods (-0.4%).

Last August, order entries increased in Madrid (+ 11.7%), Galicia (+ 3.2%) and Asturias (+ 1.9%) and fell in the other 14 communities. The greatest decreases occurred in the Balearic Islands and Extremadura (-12.8% in both cases) and Catalonia (-10.4%).
