US Treasury: new duties against China may enter into force in December

2019-10-14T14:07:21.490Z

A new package of US duties on Chinese goods will come into force on December 15, if countries don’t conclude a trade by then, said US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin.

“I have all the expectations that if there is no deal, the duties will take effect. But I look forward to reaching an agreement, ”he told CNBC.

Earlier, another round of trade talks between Washington and Beijing took place. US President Donald Trump has announced that the parties have reached a “significant first phase” of the deal.

The US administration has postponed an increase in duties on Chinese goods planned for October 15. At the same time, the representative of the United States at the talks, Robert Lighthizer, stressed that the decision on the tariffs planned for December 15 will be known "long before this date."
