The train manufacturer Talgo has appointed former socialist minister Elena Salgado as president of Motion Rail, the subsidiary with which she will compete with Renfe when the rail sector is liberalized, sources close to the company have confirmed.
Salgado was already appointed counselor before summer. These sources highlight the technical profile of Salgado (who held several ministries with the Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero), who is an engineer and has "a lot of experience in the railway sector." She was a director of Renfe and "has a lot of knowledge of the sector and in private enterprise".
Motion Rail is the subsidiary that Talgo created two years ago to participate in the passenger transport liberalization process planned for 2020. It has a rail operator license and will compete with Renfe, which until now has a monopoly.
Elena Salgado is an industrial engineer from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, a degree in Economic Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid and an MBA from the School of Industrial Organization.
She was Minister of Health with Zapatero and also held the Public Administration and Economics portfolio as vice president. She has also been a director of Renfe and Telefónica, among others.
