In Israel, the task looks extremely complicated. Benyamin Netanyahu was instructed to form a government by President Reuven Rivlin. The outgoing prime minister, boss of Likud and Benny Gantz, leader of the party Bleu-blanc had arrived at the elbow in the legislative elections, but the president finally decided for the one who had collected a little more votes. In the eyes of Reuven Rivlin, no stable government can be put in place without the participation of the two main formations: Benyamin Netanyahu's Likud and Benny Gantz's Blue-white. The president had undertaken to bring the two candidates for the post of prime minister to start negotiations.
The head of state has even put on the table his own plan of power sharing. He proposed to amend the law so that a prime minister could be declared " temporarily incapacitated " during his trial and that the head of the interim government enjoyed power close to that of a prime minister by right.
The option in his eyes would have allowed Benny Gantz to replace Benyamin Netanyahu if the prospect of a trial was confirmed. " The problem is that no one believes that Netanyahu has no new plan to get around the president's plan, " Ben Caspit wrote this morning in the columns of the daily Maariv.
And unsurprisingly, the outgoing Prime Minister's call to form a unity government under his leadership was immediately rejected by Benny Gantz on Wednesday, 25 September. Benyamin Netanyahu has been full of his support for the president's mandate but he will have trouble finding the support needed to form a government.
