Banco Santander will execute today the closure of 176 branches within the adjustment and integration plan of the absorbed Banco Popular network.

Most of the affected offices are located in the regions of Castilla y León, Cataluña and Galicia , with 32 closures in the first and 26 in the other two.

The adjustment is only part of the 1,150 offices that the bank agreed with the unions to close last June. The agreement also contemplated the departure of 3,223 employees of the group with varying degrees of incentives from the age of 50.

At the moment, a total of 2,000 people have already signed out of the group, representing 60% of the agreed figure.

The voluntary membership date ends on November 15 for the commercial network and in January 2020 for the rest of the central services.

The wave of closures executed this Friday is the largest that has been carried out at the moment. In May the entity closed 37, in June 79 and last September 6, 86.

Union sources foresee that the process will intensify before the end of November with waves of closures "every two or three weeks."
