Oil production from Saudi Arabia, the world's largest exporter of black gold, is temporarily halved. This reduction in oil production follows the drone attack claimed by Yemeni rebels on Saturday (September 13th) fires at two sites of the giant Aramco, and the temporary cessation of production of these two sites.

The drone attack on Saudi oil facilities " has resulted in the temporary suspension of production at the Abqaq and Khurais sites ," Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz ben Salmane said on Saturday. press release issued by the Saudi Press Agency. Claimed by the Yemeni Houthi rebels, it led to " the temporary suspension of production " on the two affected sites of Abqaïq and Khurais, which account for about 50% of Aramco 's total production. These temporarily shut down facilities normally produce 5.7 million barrels a day, or about 5% of the world's daily crude oil production.

Supply disruptions

" Depending on the extent of the damage and possible breakdowns, Aramco will use its contingency plans from its inventory, " said Samir Madani, co-founder of the Tanker Trackers shipping tracking site. " There could be supply disruptions if the damage to Abqaiq is significant ." The attack comes as Aramco prepares for its IPO that is to take place " soon, " according to new CEO Amin Nasser.

An investigation was opened and authorities tightened security around the two targeted sites, preventing journalists from approaching. The attack caused no injuries and the two fires that broke out were controlled according to the authorities. The Abqaq site, 60 km southwest of Dahran, the oil giant's main headquarters, is home to Aramco's largest oil processing plant, according to its website. Khurais, 250 km from Dahran, is one of the main oil fields of the public company.

The Houthi attack has been condemned by several Arab Gulf states and Egypt. It has also been condemned by the United States, which has accused Iran of being responsible, with Tehran politically supporting the Houthis.
