Banco Santander has been recognized as the most sustainable bank in the world for the publication of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) 2019. This index, a benchmark in the international arena, places this entity for the first time in the first global position; Santander also leads the ranking among European banks for the second consecutive year.

This registry evaluates the sustainable behavior of the economic, environmental and social dimensions. Santander has reached a total score of 86 points out of 100 and the highest score (100) in various areas evaluated, such as fiscal policy, privacy protection, environmental information, corporate citizenship, philanthropy and financial inclusion.

For the past 19 years, Banco Santander has been part of the DJSI index and this is the ninth consecutive time that it occupies the first position among Spanish banks. Only 25 financial institutions have been included in the world ranking, out of a total of 175 evaluated.

Bankia has joined the index this time , to get a score of 78 out of 100. More than 3,500 companies have been invited to participate in the selection process to be part of this classification. Among the Spanish companies, there are five banking entities: Santander, Bankia, BBVA, Bankinter and CaixaBank.

A total of 15 Spanish companies are listed in this edition of the global index, and 13 in the European category. Four companies in the country are leaders in their respective sectors: Santander, in Banking; Ferrovial , under construction; and Naturgy and Enagas , in Gas.

The family of indices that make up the Dow Jones Sustainability Index celebrates this year two decades since it has been prepared since 1999 with information previously requested from the companies with the highest market capitalization.
