The Commercial Complaints Department of the Commercial Control and Consumer Protection Sector in Dubai Economic Department received 464 complaints for commercial establishments during the first half of this year, a decrease of 41% compared to 790 complaints in the same period last year.

The Dubai Economic Department said in a statement yesterday that the sector is working to receive commercial complaints regarding disputes between traders inside and outside the UAE, and to make amicable settlements on the condition that the dispute is commercial and that the complainant is a commercial institution or company registered in Dubai.

Sectors

She explained that the services sector accounted for the largest share of commercial complaints by 45% of the total complaints, while decoration and construction work accounted for 11%, food and 11%, and then electronics and building materials accounted for 6% each, and 3% for each of the freight, Cars and accessories, furniture by 2%, labor supply, equipment rental and clearance of transactions by 1% each, while 7% were distributed to other sectors.

Highlights of complaints

Non-compliance with the terms of the agreement constituted the most prominent complaints received during the first half of 2019, accounting for 48% of the total complaints of commercial establishments, while non-compliance with the terms of the contract was 36%, and commercial fraud 8%, while non-compliance with specifications 2%, non-compliance with after-sales service 2%, non-compliance with warranty terms 1%, non-compliance with business 1%, and 1% surcharge on service or product.

According to the complaints received, UAE companies topped the list with 22% of the total complaints of commercial establishments at the local level, followed by Indian companies with 19%, Egyptian companies with 8%, Pakistani companies accounted for 4%, Saudi companies came with 3%. More than 41% of complaints received by commercial establishments were distributed to other countries.

Lootah added that the current results for the first half of this year showed a decrease in the rate of complaints compared to the first half of 2018, which in turn reflects the dynamism of business dealings in Dubai with its partners locally, the Middle East and the world.

"We are committed to sustaining Dubai's global reputation as a gateway to business and commerce, by resolving business complaints, provided that the dispute has not been resolved or pending before any other judicial, legal or administrative body," he said. External complaints
