• Spanish people in the UK: how to prepare for a Brexit without agreement
  • Companies.Iberia before the challenge of proving its Spanishness

The latest news from the United Kingdom has unleashed the uncertainty in the rest of European countries and, in the case of Spain, they have activated the Government's alerts to respond according to Boris Johnson's challenge. In this context, the acting president, Pedro Sánchez , has convened tomorrow an extraordinary summit of ministers in which they will analyze the measures proposed so far against the British divorce, as well as the changes and additional measures that are necessary for the next months

The meeting will take place in La Moncloa and the Vice President of the Executive, Carmen Calvo , is scheduled to attend; Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska ; the head of Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell , Labor, Migration and Social Security, Magdalena Valerio ; the head of Development, José Luis Ábalos , and the head of Economy, Nadia Calviño .

Precisely Calviño said Monday in Santander, during the annual days of the technology firm Ametic, that "we must be prepared for the worst" in the outcome of Brexit, given that every day there are turns in negotiations that make it difficult to anticipate any scenario of acting.

The expected date for the UK's departure from the EU is next October 31 . In case there was any doubt, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson launched an ultimatum to Parliament to warn that it will not delay the separation beyond that date "under any circumstances." That is, whether or not there is agreement with Brussels on the conditions of departure. If there is not, the administrative chaos is assured and that will affect aspects such as the residence of Europeans in British territory, the calculation of unemployment and unemployment benefits, documentation to travel to the country or the possibility of studying at universities in the United Kingdom , among others.

"We had the duties done, and we had prepared all the necessary legislation to be able to respond in an emergency situation, but we are going to review it this week in the light of recent events," Calviño said.

Iberia and other issues

On the table this Thursday will be these issues and others that affect Spanish companies with business and economic interests in the United Kingdom. Many of them have their contingency plans for Brexit ready for months, but others, such as Iberia , remain uncertain to clarify.

The airline is part of the British holding company IAG, which also includes other firms such as Vueling, British Airways or Aer Lingus , and the biggest threat to them is that they do not pass the European test that allows them to continue operating between EU countries. For this, the company must demonstrate that it meets the requirement of having at least 50.01% of European shareholding , since the British would no longer belong to the community, hence their commitment to obtain the certificate of Spanishness.

In early summer, Iberia obtained the first part of her passport. As confirmed by Antonio Vázquez, president of the IAG group, the State Air Safety Agency (AESA) -dependent of the Ministry of Development- approved the contingency plan presented by the group and sent all the documentation to the European Commission, which still He has not spoken about it.

But Iberia is not the only Spanish company pending the situation in the United Kingdom. Brexit has become one of the main concerns for Spanish companies with a presence on British soil. According to the forecasts of the Bank of Spain , a divorce without agreement would mean a fall of 0.8% of GDP in the next five years, about 10,000 million euros, while an agreed exit would lead to a loss of 0.02 percentage points.
