The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Yemen on Sunday reported a death toll of more than 100 after a strike by the Riyadh-led coalition over a detention center held by Houthi rebels south of the capital Sana'a.

In the morning, the coalition has announced that it has conducted air raids against a " military position where drones and missiles are stored " in the city of Dhamar, in the west of the country, according to a statement relayed by the chain of Saudi television Al-Ekhbariya.

" We estimate that more than 100 people were killed " in this strike, said Franz Rauchenstein, head of the ICRC in Yemen, who went there.

At least 40 injured were hospitalized in several hospitals in Dhamar, he said. He had earlier indicated that the target building was "a place of detention" in which the ICRC had already visited on several occasions. On Twitter, the ICRC in Yemen reported carrying 200 body bags to the bombing site.

For their part, on their Al-Masirah TV channel, the Houthis claimed that " dozens of people were killed or wounded " in seven strikes, stating that a building used as a prison was hit.

On Sunday morning, the coalition said " take all necessary precautionary measures to protect civilians ".

The coalition has been working in Yemen since 2015 to support pro-government forces against rebels who control large areas of western and northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa since 2014.

The strikes came as the coalition has been shaken for several weeks by internal fighting between Yemeni-backed southern separatists, supported by the United Arab Emirates, and pro-government forces, supported by Riyadh.

Since 2014, the conflict has left tens of thousands dead, including many civilians according to NGOs, and plunged this country - the poorest of the Arabian Peninsula - in the worst humanitarian crisis in the world according to the UN .
