Unemployment in Germany rose slightly in August. According to the Federal Employment Agency (BA), 2.319 million people were registered as unemployed. 44,000 more than in July, but 31,000 less than a year ago. The unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percentage point to 5.1 percent.

"The economic downturn also leaves its mark on the job market," said BA boss Detlef Scheele. "All in all, he is robust, though."

Already in July, a slight increase was noted, which is common for the season. Many companies are waiting with new hires from the end of the summer holidays. In addition, young people between the end of the school and the start of training report unemployed. But even excluding the seasonal fluctuations, unemployment rose.
