If there is a book that millions of houses share in different countries of the world, it is the Ikea catalog. That volume that leafs through paper and serves as a guide so that, later, in the store, the search is not an ordeal . It is the most printed publications in the world: 124 million copies, 60 million copies more than The Lord of the Rings, for example.

Its distribution in Spain will begin on Thursday, six million copies will be distributed in the mailboxes of the houses in five languages: Spanish, Galician, Basque and English. It does not reach all homes, yes.

Where does it arrive

The distribution criterion for catalog distribution "responds to socio-demographic analyzes of the company that reflect which households may be more likely to make a change due to seniority or vital situation." Customers and neighborhoods that have visited Ikea in the last year are also prioritized.

This popular volume is made by about 500 people, not including the printing press, and it takes a year to finish it. The decorators design spaces in houses that are not real, but they do "fit the needs of real people," Iria Garcia Alonso Lamberti, IKEA Interior Design Specialist in Spain and collaborates in the development of the catalog, tells elmundo.es .

If real houses are visited for the study of needs, it is a habitual practice that is carried out in all the countries of the world "to verify how we live and to study our needs closely", they point out in the company.

The people who appear on the pages are paid professionals and also some Ikea collaborators , put themselves in front of the camera and become models for a day.

Spain, muse

This year Spain has been one of the countries that have inspired the catalog. Specifically, five interior designers from our country, China, Germany, the United States and Poland have been chosen. All have decorated a house of 56 square meters taking into account the needs of a family consisting of three adults (get, a couple and grandmother), a child and a baby.

Each designer has adapted that space to the way of life in their country. For example, in Spain, the grandmother has a bed in her grandson's room because she spends a lot of time with her family, while in Germany and the US the grandmother sleeps in the living room.

The 2020 catalog (in our country 22 editions have already been printed) is also in digital format and you can even download a pdf version to be able to consult it without having to be connected to the internet.

The first catalog of Ikea was published in 1951 , in the Swedish city of Älmhult. This year 124 million copies will be printed in 80 different versions. It will reach 54 countries and will be translated into 38 languages.
