Former VW boss: Ferdinand Piëch is dead


As a Porsche grandson and long-time CEO of Volkswagen, he shaped the German automotive industry. Now Ferdinand Piëch died at the age of 82 years.

The long-standing VW executive and supervisory board chief Ferdinand Piëch is dead. This report the Bild newspaper, the Handelsblatt , ZDF and the German press agency dpa. He died at the age of 82, according to the picture already on Sunday evening in the Byerischen Rosenheim.

Piëch was one of the key players in the German automotive industry for decades. He was CEO of Audi and then Volkswagen, in 2002 he moved to the top of the VW Supervisory Board. After an internal power struggle with the then CEO Martin Winterkorn Piëch put down all his VW offices in April 2015.

Piëch was born in 1937 in Vienna as the third child of the lawyer Anton Piëch and the entrepreneur Louise Porsche, whose grandfather Ferdinand Porsche was the founder of the company named after him. Piëch went to school in Austria, later he attended a boarding school in Switzerland. After graduating from high school in 1958, he studied mechanical engineering at the ETH Zurich. He then joined the family business Porsche.
