Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced a new milestone in the development of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plants project in the Al Dhafra region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. To test the thermal performance of the plant.

In a statement yesterday, the Corporation confirmed the successful operation of the backup power transformers and the alarm transformer in the third station under normal operating conditions, after obtaining the approval and support of Abu Dhabi Transport and Control Company (TRANSCO).

These achievements were achieved one year after completion at the second station and two years at the first, reflecting the feasibility of building four identical stations at the same time.

Mohamed Ebrahim Al Hammadi, CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), said: “We are proud of the ongoing progress in the development and testing of Barakah peaceful nuclear power plants, particularly at the third plant, while maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficiency, as demonstrated during the operation. “We will continue to work to establish Baraka's peaceful nuclear power plants as a model for new nuclear power projects around the world.”

Al Hammadi confirmed that this achievement was the result of cooperation between the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and its partner in the joint consortium and the main contractor of the project, Korean Electric Power Company (KEPCO), in addition to a team of experts of Nawat Energy Company.

After this achievement has been accomplished and the tests have been completed safely, the test and operating teams will begin the preparations necessary to start the thermal performance test phase at the third station. Thermal performance testing lasts several weeks and involves more than 200 independent and comprehensive tests to verify the performance of major systems in full operation, but without the use of nuclear fuel.
