Manufacturers in the industry achieved 4.9 percent less turnover in the second quarter than in the same period in 2018. The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reports Tuesday.
Even in the first quarter, the result was already less than a year earlier. No lesser growth had occurred in that quarter for two years.
The change can be explained by the relocation of business activities from the Netherlands to abroad. As a result, sales will be depressed from the fourth quarter of 2018.
Producers also see their staff shortage as the biggest obstacle to their business operations. At the end of the second quarter, no fewer than 24,000 vacancies were open in the sector.
However, at the start of the third quarter of 2019, 5 percent of producers expected to increase their workforce in the coming months.
