France has already banned pulse fishing in its territorial waters. The French Ministry of Agriculture announced this on Wednesday.
With the measure, the French authorities anticipate a European ban on pulse fishing.
That should come into effect in 2021. This measure is seen as a blow to Dutch fishermen, who have invested heavily in technology.
In pulse fishing, fish are shocked by current pulses and thus driven into the net. That technology is forbidden in several places in the world, but according to proponents it has many advantages. They point to lower fuel consumption on fishing boats and less bottom disturbance.
French fishermen have been complaining about pulse fishing for some time. They believe that there is unfair competition from Dutch people who use the technology.
