Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced on August 7 an amendment to the Export Trade Control Ordinance that excludes South Korea from the so-called 'white country' (white list), which is subject to general export license.

The amendment, which was passed at the Cabinet meeting of the Japanese government on the last two days, will come into effect on the 28th.

As a result, if a Japanese company exports a regulated military item to Korea, the export process will be more complicated, starting with the 28th of March.

In addition, if the Japanese government determines that nonregulated (general) items may be diverted to weapons development, a separate export permit must be obtained.
