The announcement, signed by the Kurdish authorities who also report the arrest of a possible accomplice, could have important consequences in the region. Turkey has carried out punitive bombings against PKK bases without waiting for the end of the investigation, even though the Kurdish armed group denies the origin of the attack.

Since 17 July, the only information on the murder of the Turkish Vice-Consul comes from Iraqi Kurdish security forces and Turkey. On the spot, only a journalist from the ruling party chain in Erbil had access to surveillance cameras and crime scenes.

According to Reporters Without Borders, a journalist from Al Jazeera was beaten by Kurdish security forces while trying to obtain the same access. An Iranian journalist was arrested.

Media cameras as well as the phones of passers-by and possible witnesses were all confiscated. Social networks are cut.

The arrested person would actually be a person already incarcerated for months

A cloud of darkness that may be partly explained by the diplomatic situation: Ankara is a great ally of the Iraqi Kurdish authorities. And to make matters worse, the nephew of the Iraqi Kurdish president was present at the time of the facts. An independent Kurdish newspaper claims that it is actually the author of the shooting. He reportedly targeted the two other peshmerga killed and mistakenly reached the vice-consul.

Another independent and respected media claims that in any case the suspect officially arrested Saturday was in fact incarcerated for several months in Erbil for a flight history. Yet he has the profile all found: former member of the PKK, armed group in rivalry with the ruling party in Iraqi Kurdistan and sworn enemy of Turkey .
