Total freight transport in the Netherlands rose slightly in 2018 to 1.71 billion tonnes. The 1.2 percent increase was entirely due to trucks and shipping, according to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
Aircraft, inland vessels and freight trains transported less from, to and within the Netherlands. Of all goods transported in 2018, more than 44 percent of the weight was transported by trucks.
Seagoing vessels transported more than 35 percent of all goods and inland shipping accounted for more than 18 percent. Rail transport and aviation only made a very limited contribution to total freight transport.
Domestic freight transport increased by 3.5 percent to 681 million tons. Total cross-border freight transport fell slightly in 2018, to almost 1.04 billion tonnes.
