Washington inflicts new sanctions on several Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, amid tensions in the Gulf following the destruction of an American drone by the Islamic Republic.

The decree was signed this Monday, June 24 by Donald Trump. In the viewfinder of the US president, the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the highest authority of the Islamic Republic.

The sanctions also target eight officers of the Guardians of the Revolution, the regime's elite army.

According to the US president, this decision follows " a series of aggressive behavior by the Iranian regime over the past weeks, including the destruction of an American UAV ."

The White House has chosen this time to attack people and not the country, already suffocated by economic sanctions that target its oil and financial sectors.

Ready to discuss anytime

Washington, however, does not reveal the details of these new sanctions. But Donald Trump assures it: they will prevent senior Iranian officials from accessing their financial resources.

The Americans also promise sanctions against Mohamad Javad Zarif, the head of diplomacy of the Islamic Republic. These will occur later in the week.

The goal is to freeze " billions of dollars " in additional Iranian assets, promises US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Donald Trump is also ready to discuss with the Iranians at any time. Assuring that " Iran will never have access to nuclear weapons ".
