Twitter is apparently increasingly succeeding in making money from its users. The gain of the short message service rose to 191 million dollars. In the same period last year, it had been $ 61 million. After the announcement of the numbers, the Twitter share temporarily increased by almost 17 percent.

The US company's revenue grew 18 percent to $ 787 million. The growth was mainly driven by the increase in advertising revenues by 18 percent to 679 million dollars, as Twitter announced on Tuesday. The number of Twitter users worldwide also grew slightly. Monthly active users increased by nine million to 330 million in the three-month period from January to March.

However, Twitter says goodbye to this measure and instead wants to refer to the number of "monetizable" daily users. This means users who log in on any day via an Internet browser or an app and get to see ads. Here, there was an increase to 134 million users. In the previous year, there were 120 million.

According to company boss Jack Dorsey, Twitter benefited from its efforts to tackle more abusive or non-authentic content that had recently damaged the reputation of the 240-character service. In addition, governments around the world have repeatedly called for more action against hate speech and incitement to violence.

"We are taking a more proactive approach to curb the abuse and its effects," Dorsey said. "We reduce the burden on victims and, if possible, act before abuse is reported." For this purpose, Twitter also uses self-learning algorithms. The company expects rising operating costs because of the fight against hate comments.

"The best thing that ever happened to Twitter is Donald Trump"

However, US President Donald Trump took advantage of the quarterly figures to reiterate criticisms of Twitter, which is one of his favorite channels of communication. "The best thing that ever happened to Twitter is Donald Trump," the Republican tweeted, citing Fox journalist Maria Bartiromo. Twitter, however, treated him "not good" because he was a Republican. Many people have difficulty registering.

"The best thing ever to happen to Twitter is Donald Trump." @MariaBartiromo So true, but they do not treat me well as a Republican. Very discriminatory, hard for people to sign on. Constantly taking people off list. Big complaints from many people. Different names-over 100 M .....

Trump has nearly 60 million followers on Twitter, making it one of the most featured on the service worldwide. Still, he accuses Twitter and some other social media of being biased towards conservatives. He accused Twitter and other services of curtailing the visibility of prominent Republicans, but provided no evidence.

Twitter boss Jack Dorsey also said the service is increasingly focused on supporting live events such as sporting events. "We believe that it must be just as easy to follow an event or topic as you can now follow a person." The plan is also to know the users so well that Twitter can highlight interesting events for them as well as the most relevant comments. But this is a long-term project, limited Dorsey.
